Take me back to the 80s!

Thursday 13

Back in the day when I didn’t know better and never thought of how horrific or baduy I would look 10-20 years after, there was an era called THE EIGHTIES. I’m sure you all know what I mean! Am I hearing Gasps and Oh Mys and Eeeks? Hehehe! A few days ago, we took a trip down to memory lane and watched old family videos. The hilarious moments are what triggered this blast from the unforgettable eighties. It wasn’t all that bad. A lot of good stuff came from there too! And so for this weeks Thursday 13, I listed down 13 things that just scream EIGHTIES to let you reminisce with me!

1. Teased Hair and Aqua Net. Oh who could ever forget about this?! This environmental nightmare allowed the cool ones then to have tidal-wavish hair that would not budge even if the most horrific typhoon came. I’m talking BIG BIG BIG hair. And yes, I had my share of THAT too, unfortunately. I have memories of stepping into the girls bathroom in school and becoming intoxicated with Aqua Net fumes until they actually banned it in school. Hahaha!

2. Madonna. A material, a material girl! Ohhhhh boy! Everyone wanted to copy her. Everyone sang her songs, wore her outfits, copied her hair! We had a proliferation of girls wearing cross accessories, lacy gloves and clothes and everything else that screams Madonna.

3. Huge pads. Seriously, did everyone have to look like they were football players?! Teehee! πŸ˜› I was too young to have been dragged into this fashion statement but my mom sure wasn’t. Don’t kill me mom! But I actually liked it then because I thought it was so comfy to rest my head on my mom’s shoulder every time I got sleepy! Instant pillows!

4. Arcade Games and Family Computers. Good grief, I can’t even begin to imagine how much time I spent playing Super Mario Brothers on the family computer! Hahaha! Even my mom, my dad and my nanny used to play this with me! See, the music is ringing in my head right now. Like I said, the eighties weren’t all that bad! We also had PacMan, Space Invaders and Galaga! Now I can proudly say that I can beat the crap out of anyone in Galaga! Heck, I was Galaga Queen! Hahahaha!

5. Exaggerated Tops. From big sweaters to those wide knitted tops or those trapezoid shaped shirts that I don’t even know what they’re called! Horrible! Not to mention all those neon colors (which I had some of!) Hehehe! I think pretty much everything about the eighties were about EXCESSIVE OVERABUNDANT OVERFLOWING EXAGGERATION. πŸ˜›

6. A whole bunch of other must mention 80’s Artists. Oh who can talk about the 80s without even mentioning their version of Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears? None other than Tiffany and Debbie Gibson! Of course there was also Boy George and the Culture Club. I was so into them for the longest time and my cousins and I would even dance to their songs during family parties. Okay, did I just admit too much? Karma Chameleon, Church of the Poisoned Mind, and hold you breath … Do you really wanna hurt me?! Hahaha! Then there’s Rick Astley … Together Forever! Never Gonna Give You Up! so who’s singing now? Good luck with last song syndromes! πŸ˜€

7. Menudo vs Duran Duran. Oh I know you guys are out there! If You’re Not Here in my blog by tomorrow, I will throw a Cannonball at you so Please Be Good To Me and leave a comment. Nyahahaha! Even as young as I was then, I was already admiring Ricky Martin’s bonbons. Hahahaha!

Although I was a huge Menudo fan (fine! I admit it okay?), I was also pretty much hung over Duran Duran too. Mostly because of John Taylor and Nick Rhodes. Hehe! They even shot a film here in the Philippines I remember but unfortunately it was in some far off island I couldn’t go to. I remember watching their MTV’s projected on a widescreen with my cousins and screaming our lungs out for John Taylor. We were having the concert-y feeling. Hehehe!

8. High-cut Reebok Shoes. Okay, THESE I most definitely had! Oh and I had my share of Keds too!

9. Blazers ala Pretty in Pink or Miami Vice. Oh I’m sure you remember Miami Vice AND Pretty in Pink! Blane and Don Johnson wannabees! Both inspired this whole ridiculous blazer trend! Everyone wanted to wear blazers over anything! Thank goodness I never tried to do THAT! Hahahaha!

10. Work-out clothes. Thank you very much to FAME, girls paraded around with leg warmers or scrunched up socks! And boys (oh you boys can admit it!) had a thing for wearing those fishnet-ish work-out tops! Think Sean Astin in 50 First Dates (Drew’s brother). Hehehe!

11. Cool TV Shows. There was a whole bunch of shows I loved watching during the eighties. There was 21 Jump Street, Miami Vice, A-Team, Alf, Perfect Strangers, The Cosby Show, Full House, Growing Pains, Murphy Brown, Moonlighting, Doogie Howser, Charles in Charge, Murder She Wrote, MacGyver, Small Wonder, Saved By the Bell and oh my god! Punky Brewster! πŸ™‚

12. Michael Jackson. Oh crap! I almost totally forgot about him! Michael and his jerri curls which by the way were so popular then too! Curl activator anyone? I don’t think I have to elaborate on Billy Jean and Thriller. Not to mention those black leather jackets!

13. 80s cartoons. Oh there was GI Joe, Thundercats (I wanted to be Cheetara), Voltron, Care Bears, Smurfs, The Snorkels, Glow Worms, Strawberry Shortcake, Fraggle Rock (although technically they weren’t cartoons!), and Cabbage Patch Kids!

So I hope it was a nice trip down memory lane. Get out and admit you were part of this wonderfully ridiculously fun era! I’m sure there a re a whole bunch of fun stuff I forgot to mention. But then again, I was limited to 13! Happy Halloween! πŸ˜€
